Currency Management — Hold Value, Not Clutter

Basic KnowledgePublishedUpdated

As you farm, one currency inevitably piles up — usually a common drop like Exalted Orbs. Leave that pile sitting in your stash and your buying power quietly erodes even though you did nothing wrong.

The reason is simple: common currency keeps flooding into the economy as a season progresses. Your Exalted count stays the same, but what it buys shrinks month over month.

Exchange rates are not fixed

Rates between currencies don’t drift by a few percent over a season — they can swing by tens of times over.

The clearest example is Exalted Orb to Divine Orb. Early in a season a few hundred Exalted might buy a Divine; deep into the season that same Divine can cost several times more. This pattern repeats league after league.

That said, memorising a specific number is pointless. It differs by league, by patch, and moves continuously within a single season. Check the live rate in the in-game currency exchange or on a price site like poe.ninja whenever it matters. Only the direction is worth remembering: common currency weakens over time.

Why this happens

It comes down to use case and supply.

  • Exalted Orbs drop frequently and are consumed heavily throughout crafting. Everyone keeps getting them and keeps spending them, so the market stays flooded.
  • Divine Orbs are used on finished items and act as the unit of account for high-end trade. Demand holds steady.

On top of that, the whole playerbase’s farming efficiency rises as a season matures, so the common currency inflates faster.

Worth noting: Divine Orbs drop more frequently in 0.5 than they used to. That softens their absolute scarcity, but their position relative to common currency is unchanged.

Practical approach

  1. Audit your stash periodically. One currency visibly stacking up is your signal.
  2. Only convert the genuine surplus. If you convert currency you’ll need for crafting, you’ll have to buy it back later and eat the spread.
  3. Earlier in the season is better. The same pile buys more high-tier currency.
  4. Don’t convert everything at once. Rates keep moving, so splitting it across a few conversions is safer.
  5. Target whatever is the high-tier currency at the time. Divine Orbs are the usual benchmark, but check current prices rather than assuming.

The question to ask first

Before converting anything, ask one thing: “Will I actually use this within the season?”

  • Yes → leave it. There’s no reason to convert crafting material and buy it back.
  • Probably not → convert now. Waiting only makes the rate worse.

New players rarely accumulate enough for any of this to matter, so treat this page as something to apply once you’re running maps, not during the campaign.
