Ascendancy Classes — Concept and How to Choose

Basic KnowledgePublishedUpdated

Ascendancy is a specialization sub-tree layered on top of your class. It uses a separate point pool from the regular passive tree, and its handful of powerful nodes strongly cement your character’s identity. Because each Ascendancy node is potent, which Ascendancy you pick shapes much of your build’s direction.

Rather than recommend a specific Ascendancy, this page covers the concept and how to choose. The exact nodes of each Ascendancy class change between patches, so check the in-game screen for specifics.

What Ascendancy is

  • Each class has a few Ascendancy classes to choose from; you pick one and allocate its dedicated sub-tree.
  • That sub-tree is separate from the regular passive tree and is filled with Ascendancy points only.
  • The nodes are strong but few (8 points total), so it’s very much about setting a direction rather than broad filler.

Earning Ascendancy points

Ascendancy points come only from the Ascension Trials. There are 8 total, earned 2 at a time as you clear each difficulty tier (four tiers).

  • There are two trials. The Trial of the Sekhemas first opens in Act 2 and the Trial of Chaos in Act 3. Passing either grants your first ascension (2 points).
  • Early on you’ll take the low tier for 2 points; the rest are filled later with higher-level keys (usually in the endgame). The full picture is in the Ascension Trials section of Pinnacle Bosses.

How to choose a direction

Ascendancy classes tend to have a clear slant — offense-focused, defense/survival-focused, or specialists that heavily push minions, ailments, or a particular skill family. The rule for choosing is simple:

  • Pick the one that overlaps with your main damage and playstyle. A minion build wants a minion specialist; an ailment-kill build wants the one that pushes that family.
  • If an Ascendancy strongly enables a mechanic, it’s common to build around that Ascendancy — the nodes are powerful enough to justify it.
  • If survival is shaky, lean defensive; if damage is short, lean offensive — fill the direction that most clearly helps your build right now.

Since the exact Ascendancy classes and nodes get tuned each patch, read each option’s in-game description before deciding.

Choosing for your build — tips

  • Spend your first 2 points on the nodes that most clearly help. You don’t have all 8 yet, so prioritise whatever solves your current problem (weak damage or shaky survival).
  • If you focus one main skill, an Ascendancy that empowers that skill family gives the most value (see Skill Gems & Support Gems).
  • Think in terms of a division of labour with the regular tree: get fundamentals like resistances and life from the passive tree, and cement your identity with Ascendancy.
