Atziri, the Red Queen — the Only Boss You Build Your Way Into
Atziri, the Red Queen is the pinnacle boss of Fate of the Vaal. She was added in 0.4, and 0.5 brought the whole mechanic into the core game.
One thing sets her apart from the other seven pinnacle bosses: there is no key item. You don’t gather splinters or carry something in — you build the temple until a path exists.
If you haven’t read it yet, Pinnacle Bosses covers the overall 0.5 structure.
What “building the temple” means
Get the structure straight first.
Activating Ancient Beacons yields Energised Crystals. Six crystals activate the Temple Console, which generates six Room Cards that you place on a 9×9 grid to extend the temple. You can hold up to 60 crystals.
Placement has rules:
- Rooms can only be placed adjacent to Paths or rooms they interact with.
- Roughly half of the Room Cards generated are Paths.
- You must place at least one card to run the temple.
The important part is that the temple accumulates rather than resetting. Progress and stored crystals are tracked per character, though.
Destabilisation — what you built partly collapses
Every time you close the temple, part of it is randomly removed. This is the core constraint of the mechanic.
| When | What’s removed |
|---|---|
| Closing normally | About 10% of the temple |
| After killing Xipocado | About 30%, and the Architect’s Chamber is relocated at random |
| After killing Atziri | The Royal Access Chamber and most Paths |
Which means after killing Atziri you have to rebuild a good chunk of the route. Repeat attempts are not a simple re-entry.
The access sequence
Exactly as the wiki lists it:
- Place rooms to reach the Architect’s Chamber.
- Defeat Xipocado, Royal Architect.
- Use Xipocado’s Console to place a Royal Access Chamber.
- Place rooms to reach the Royal Access Chamber and unlock Atziri’s Chambers.
- Place rooms to reach Atziri’s Chamber.
Here’s where most people get stuck:
Atziri’s Chamber can be pathed to directly, but the door leading to her arena will not unlock until you interact with the Royal Access Chamber.
So if you’re standing at Atziri’s Chamber and the door won’t open, you haven’t used the Royal Access Chamber yet.
Three prerequisites that are easy to miss
- The temple must be area level 75+. That’s the condition for Xipocado’s Console to offer a Royal Access Chamber at all — and it won’t appear if you’ve already placed one.
- Atziri’s Chamber must be connected to the entrance for the Access Chamber ritual to work.
- You must be on the past version of the temple. The present version’s Architect’s Chamber contains no Xipocado, and its console offers no Royal Access Chamber. Recruiting Doryani to activate the time portal permanently switches the temple to the past version.
The temple’s area level follows the level of the character who opened it, capping at 81 once that character is level 90+.
Dying closes the temple
The harshest rule in this mechanic:
If you die or otherwise leave the area while fighting Xipocado or Atziri, the temple closes automatically — causing destabilisation.
In ordinary rooms you can respawn at a checkpoint with monster state preserved. But respawning while in either boss chamber puts you into a new temple instance with most other content removed. You can retry the boss, but that run’s rewards shrink considerably.
You can portal out at any time, which returns you to the Vaal Ruins. You can re-enter through the main door, but no return portal is provided.
Also worth knowing: area modifiers do not affect Xipocado or Atziri.
Rewards — carry the medallion back
Killing Atziri yields Atziri’s Medallion, and there’s one more step after that.
Take the medallion to the checkpoint at the entrance of Atziri’s Chamber. It’s consumed to unlock Atziri’s Vault and six Royal Trove chests. In other words, don’t kill her and immediately leave.
The Vault contains one of:
- Atziri’s Step
- Drillneck
- Atziri’s Splendour
- Atziri’s Rule
- Atziri’s Contempt
- Flesh Crucible
Sacrificial Regalia, Atziri’s Impatience, and Zerphi’s Infamy can appear alongside it.
The Royal Troves hold currency, including temple-exclusive items such as the Ancient Infuser, Architect’s Orb, Core Destabiliser, Crystallised Corruption, Orb of Extraction, and Vaal Cultivation Orb.
Modifiers and values for each item are on the equipment pages.
The wiki does publish drop rates, but they’re community estimates from a 100-sample set taken in 0.4.0, so they aren’t reproduced here.
What changed in 0.5
- Fate of the Vaal moved into the core game. You energise six Ancient Beacons in Act 3 to open a portal to the Vaal Ruins, and meet a second set of beacons in the Interludes.
- Atziri’s Temple appears on the Atlas in Lira Vaal, north-east of your starting location. Maps in that city always contain Energised Crystals and grant points for the Fate of the Vaal Atlas tree.
- The temple now starts with more rooms, so you reach Atziri faster.
- Crystal storage raised to 60, medallion cap to 6.
- The temple’s monster level now factors in the level of the areas where its crystals were obtained.
