Leveling & Campaign Progress — Act Order and Pace

Basic KnowledgePublishedUpdated

The point of the campaign isn’t the story — it’s reaching level 65 and the endgame quickly. PoE2 0.5’s campaign is played through only once (the old “Cruel” second run is gone), so the key is to follow the main path without fuss. This page covers the act structure, pace tips, and the checks to do right before the endgame.

Campaign structure (act overview)

In 0.5 the campaign is Acts 1–4 once, then three short Interludes, and an Epilogue that opens the endgame.

StageRegion
Act 1Ogham
Act 2Vastiri
Act 3Aggorat
Act 4Ngamakanui
3 InterludesThe Curse of Holten → The Stolen Barya → Doryani’s Contingency
EpilogueZiggurat Refuge → endgame

It used to be that after Acts 1–3 you replayed the same acts on “Cruel” difficulty, but 0.3.0 removed Cruel and replaced it with Act 4 and the Interludes. Acts 5–6 arrive with the full 1.0 release, so today’s three Interludes are temporary side-stories filling that gap. So the run is one continuous line: Act 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → three Interludes → Epilogue.

Pace tips

The campaign is a one-time stretch, so efficiency is time.

  • Keep your weapon and damage current. PoE2 leveling leans heavily on weapon performance. If monsters visibly stop dying, your weapon has fallen behind — swap to a higher base-tier weapon and keep damage mods up.
  • You don’t need to kill every pack. Prioritise the main quest path and boss objectives; don’t sweep every corner.
  • Use checkpoints, waypoints, and town portals. Areas have checkpoints you can fast-travel between from the map, and you can portal back to town to restock and return.
  • Don’t skip quest rewards. Several campaign quests grant skill/spirit gems and passive points — permanent power that’s easy to walk past.

Per-stage checkpoints

Make a habit of a few checks at each act boundary.

  • Re-cap your resistances. Each act you clear applies a permanent −10% to elemental resistance, accumulating to −60% by the Epilogue. So keep patching resistance on your gear to stay at 75%. See Defense Basics for details.
  • Check that your weapon keeps up with the area level. Swap immediately if it’s behind.
  • Ascension can be done during the campaign too. The Trial of the Sekhemas first opens in Act 2 and the Trial of Chaos in Act 3. Passing either one grants your first ascension points (2).

Pair these with the tips in The Basics for what to check at each stage.

Preparing for the endgame

After Act 4 and the Interludes, the Epilogue takes place at the Ziggurat Refuge, where you’re introduced to the Atlas and Map Device and receive your first Waystone. Mapping starts at area level 65, which is usually about where the campaign ends.

The final check before the endgame is simple:

  • Elemental resistances at 75%. You’re carrying the accumulated −60% penalty, so anything short here melts fast in maps.
  • Weapon and maximum Life updated to late-campaign levels.
  • From there, continue with Atlas & Mapping.
