The Genesis Tree — Wombgifts, Catalysts, and Breachstones

Basic KnowledgePublishedUpdated

One line in the 0.5.0 patch notes rewrote this entire crafting line.

Catalysts no longer drop from monsters, and can only be obtained through the Genesis Tree.

No amount of running Breach maps will make catalysts fall on the floor. Spending them is covered in Raising Quality with Catalysts; this page is about making them.

This is the single most important thing on this page. Straight from the official 0.5.0 notes:

Catalysts can no longer drop from Monsters, these are now solely obtained from the Genesis Tree.

No amount of Breach farming will put a catalyst on the floor. “Farm Breach for catalysts” no longer works.

Where it is

A crafting system in The Monastery of the Keepers, a new hub south of your Atlas start. The official description:

The Genesis Tree allows consuming of Wombgifts and Hiveblood to create Rings, Amulets, Belts and Currency. Nodes on the Genesis Tree can be allocated to affect what items will be crafted.

Each Wombgift type goes into its own womb:

WombgiftProduces
LavishCurrency
SignetRing
OrnateAmulet
BandedBelt
RevelatoryBreachstone

Both Wombgifts and Hiveblood drop from Breach monsters.

Rolling for the catalyst you want

Put a Lavish Wombgift into the currency womb. The currency it produces can be a catalyst.

The crucial part is that you can’t pick the output — you shape the odds with nodes.

  • Catalyst Chance — 15% chance for birthed currency to be a catalyst
  • Can only Birth Catalysts — restricts currency output to catalysts
  • Exclusion nodes — e.g. “Cannot Birth Skittering Catalysts,” removing types you don’t want from the pool
  • Jewel Catalyst Chance (4%) or Enhanced Creation (10%) — Refined (jewel) catalysts require this second roll

If you’re hunting one specific catalyst, exclusion nodes are the real lever. Refined catalysts are considerably rarer because they sit behind two rolls.

If you end up with spares, three of the same catalyst vendors into one random catalyst.

Breach Rings still drop normally from Breach monsters and Clasped Hands. Refined Breach Rings, however, come only from the Genesis Tree — a 10% chance for a birthed item to be a Breach Ring, then a 5% chance for that to be Refined instead.
