Raising Quality with Catalysts — Breach Rings and Refined Catalysts
Breach-line crafting is about quality. Where other currencies add and remove affixes, catalysts raise the values of affixes that are already there — the tool you reach for when a ring or amulet is nearly finished and you want one last push.
0.5 overhauled this line. In particular how you obtain catalysts changed completely — since 0.5 catalysts no longer drop from monsters, and The Genesis Tree is the only source. Acquisition is covered there; this page is about spending them.
Raising quality with catalysts
A catalyst adds quality that only enhances one category of modifier. On a ring or amulet, each 1% of quality gives 1% increased magnitude to modifiers matching that catalyst’s tag.
One constraint matters above all: only one catalyst quality type persists. Every catalyst says “Replaces other quality types.” Apply a Cold catalyst to a ring you’ve been building with Fire quality and the Fire quality is gone. Commit each item to a single direction.
Types and what they enhance
| Catalyst | Enhances |
|---|---|
| Flesh Catalyst | Life |
| Neural Catalyst | Mana |
| Carapace Catalyst | Armour, Evasion, Energy Shield |
| Adaptive Catalyst | Attributes |
| Reaver Catalyst | Attack |
| Sibilant Catalyst | Caster |
| Skittering Catalyst | Speed |
| Necrotic Catalyst | Minion |
| Xoph’s Catalyst | Fire |
| Tul’s Catalyst | Cold |
| Esh’s Catalyst | Lightning |
| Uul-Netol’s Catalyst | Physical |
| Chayula’s Catalyst | Chaos |
The Necrotic Catalyst was added in 0.5.2 — it’s the target if you play minions.
Regular and “Refined” catalysts hit different item types
This is the most common point of confusion. Refined is not a stronger tier — it’s a separate item with a different target.
- Regular catalysts → rings and amulets only
- Refined catalysts → jewels only (new in 0.5)
The modifier categories pair up one-to-one. Just as a Flesh Catalyst boosts Life on a ring, a Refined Flesh Catalyst boosts Life modifiers on a jewel. Trying to use a Refined catalyst on jewellery simply won’t apply, so check the target first.
Quality caps
| Target | Cap |
|---|---|
| Regular ring / amulet | 20% |
| Breach Ring | 40% |
| Refined Breach Ring | 45% |
Breach Rings carry an implicit +20% to Maximum Quality, which is what gets them to 40%. Refined Breach Rings give +25%, hence 45%. That’s more than double a regular ring’s ceiling, so if you’re serious about catalysts, start from a Breach Ring base.
How much quality a single application adds is not officially published. The one confirmed direction is that higher item level means less quality per application. The quality cap for jewels also isn’t stated by any trustworthy source, so it isn’t asserted here.
Essence of the Breach
Essence of the Breach works differently. It removes a random modifier from a rare item and adds a guaranteed one — and on jewellery that guaranteed modifier is “+20% to Maximum Quality.”
That means a regular ring or amulet can also reach the 40% cap. It’s the workaround when you already have a well-rolled piece of jewellery and want to raise its quality ceiling without starting over. Bear in mind it consumes your one crafted modifier, as covered in Basic Currency Crafting.
Practical order
- Choose the base. A Breach Ring if you’re committing, otherwise a regular piece you’ll lift with Essence of the Breach.
- Finish the modifiers first. Quality scales what’s already on the item, so applying it before the modifier list is settled aims at the wrong target.
- Pick one modifier category. Xoph’s for a fire damage ring, Flesh for a life-focused one.
- Apply only that catalyst, repeatedly. Mixing types wipes the quality you built.
If you do waste catalysts, there’s a safety net: since 0.5, alternate quality items made with catalysts can be salvaged to return a portion of the catalysts used.
