Crafted Modifier Rules — Essences and the One-Per-Item Limit
This is where older guides break down hardest in 0.5. You can know every individual currency perfectly and still hit a wall halfway through if you don’t know this rule.
The rule itself
This is the biggest change in 0.5.
All crafted modifiers are now guaranteed, but items can only have 1 crafted modifier at a time. Desecrated modifiers no longer count as crafted modifiers, but items are limited to 1 Desecrated modifier.
Essences and Alloys both write into that single crafted slot. The practical result: on any item you get one crafted modifier plus one desecrated modifier — two chosen affixes total — and the remaining four slots have to come from random currency. Stacking several essences to accumulate the modifiers you want, the way earlier seasons worked, no longer functions.
Essence tiers are worth memorising alongside this. Lesser, normal, and Greater essences upgrade a Magic item to Rare and add their guaranteed modifier, keeping what’s already there. Perfect and Corrupted essences target a Rare item and remove one random modifier to place the guaranteed one.
Everything that competes for that one slot
“One crafted modifier” is a single shared slot. All of these use it:
| System | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Essences | A guaranteed affix |
| Alloys | A guaranteed affix |
| Liquid Emotions (jewels) | A base-determined guaranteed modifier |
| Essence of the Breach (jewellery) | +20% maximum quality |
So in practice you decide which one guaranteed modifier this item needs before you start. Raise a ring’s quality cap with Essence of the Breach and you can no longer add a guaranteed affix to it with another essence.
What Greater and Perfect actually change
Greater and Perfect versions do exactly what the base orb does. The single difference is that they put a floor on the level of the modifier added. Low-tier modifiers drop out of the pool entirely, so you roll junk less often.
| Currency | Greater min. modifier level | Perfect min. modifier level |
|---|---|---|
| Orb of Transmutation · Orb of Augmentation | 44 | 70 |
| Regal Orb · Exalted Orb · Chaos Orb | 35 | 50 |
Greater currency breaks down into 3 of the regular version, and Perfect into 3 Greater. In 0.5 Greater and Perfect currency became rarer overall, Transmutation and Augmentation significantly so. To compensate, Greater Transmutation and Augmentation dropped from 55 to a minimum modifier level of 44 and now start dropping in Act 4, which makes them usable much earlier.
Keep in mind the minimum is only a floor. The ceiling is still item level. On a low item level base, even Perfect currency won’t reach top-tier numbers.
